The design capabilities offered by Antenna Magus are the most flexible of all commercial antenna design tools. Each antenna can be designed for a range of objectives - like operating frequencies, gain, input impedance and substrate type. The synthesis algorithms match objectives to physical parameter sets in a matter of seconds, allowing the engineer instant feedback about the expected dimensions of the antenna.

During the development of the design algorithms used by Antenna Magus it has become clear that many published antenna papers make undisclosed assumptions or give insufficient information to recreate the reported results or implement the underlying algorithms. For many cases, design routines and algorithms have to be developed from basic antenna principles and tested to give trustworthy designs.

When designing an antenna by hand it is easy to make careless mistakes while writing and keying in algorithms. Finding and resolving even simple mistakes - such as sign errors or missing multiplication factors - can waste hours of valuable time. Each design in Antenna Magus has been validated for a wide range of design scenarios, comparing thousands of 3D-EM simulation results to design objectives. This ensures that - even when designing an antenna that you know well - you can design quickly, avoid annoying 'finger trouble' errors and be confident that all designs will indeed give performance that is very close to the specified design objectives.

Estimate designed antennas' performance

Antenna Magus' estimated performance is similar to "analysis" or "simulations" typically performed using general 3D EM analysis tools - but it has a fundamental difference.

Unlike general EM analysis tools, Antenna Magus knows the topology and the environment of the antenna and can make certain approximations which can speed up analysis time while still giving a reasonable performance estimate.

For example, consider the pin fed pyramidal horn antenna. When estimating the performance of this antenna, Antenna Magus decouples the waveguide section from the flare section. This approach ignores any effect that the flare-discontinuity could have on the input and also assumes that the flare is ideally excited. Despite these assumptions, a reasonable prediction of both impedance and radiation pattern performance can be provided in a couple of seconds for any horn design. Where relevant, differences that can be expected between the performance estimation and a full wave analysis are quantified and explained in each antenna's information document.

Antenna Magus automatically sets up the graphs for each antenna. This reduces clutter and the time it takes to extract the information you need.

Another really useful function in Antenna Magus is "tweaking". It allows users to change the designed parameters within certain boundaries. The example below shows a square truncated circularly polarised patch which was designed for 2.4 GHz. By tweaking the length of the truncation, it is easy to see that the two orthogonal modes shift away from one another, thereby making two linearly polarised resonances rather than one circularly polarised resonance. This insight can be applied later in the design process, when optimising the structure in a 3D EM analysis tool.

Tweaking allows the user to study the relationship between certain physical parameters and the antenna's performance, which makes Antenna Magus not only a dedicated design tool but also a powerful learning tool.
